Tir na nOg Club Run #75

Good run - cool but not cold - I ran in my SportsKilt for the first time - I liked it and got a number of positive comments - due to the New Years Eve stuff going on tonight there were a lot of people on the mall by the Capital, around the Capital and down Fayetteville street - there were hundreds of people out tonight - I had several people take pictures of me and one redheaded young lady say something to me - I could not under stand what she said - she told me she said hello in Gaelic - I smiled and told her hello - I did not get off work early enough to start my run at 4 so I started at about 4:40 - I ran alone and felt good and enjoyed the run - no problems or pains -

Good run but cold and wet - it was not raining hard but it was raining - I really did not want to be out today but I am glad I did manage to get a nice run in - I am really having trouble with depression - noting new I do this every year during this time - I am sure looking forward to the return of the Sun - It does not seem like I am training very much but I am feeling burnt out - I am mostly trying to keep what conditioning I have so that I can do the best I can at the Goofy - I do not enjoy running right now - I will have to do something to get back to it - maybe it is just this time of year - not making an important decisions right now it likely a good idea - no problems or pains -

Tir na nOg Club Run #74

Good run or walk - met Jon, Bert and Meri for the Tir na nOg Christmas eve run - I would say there were only about 20 runner tonight - smallest group I have seen - I expected it to be small but not as small as it was - is was suppose to be a sow run but we ended up just walking it and that was fine - it was nice looking at the lights - we all stayed after the run for a beer and small meal - it was real nice -

Good run - I really did not feel like doing the run today - I seem to have more trouble with depression this time of year and today it took everything I have to make it to the run - I was hopping it would help, the running and being with some of my friends - it did help and I did have a good run but I was not likely very good company for my friends - it was a nice but cold day, a little windy but pretty blue skies - we had a nice group - no problems or pains -

Symphony Lake Green-way Run

Good run - nice time with Jon, Emily and Meri - it was dark, cold and raining a tiny bit b ut it was not bad and I really wanted to get a run in having mist being able to run Mon - Wed - we ran a fairly good pace and took only a few walks breaks - it was great - went to Emily and Jon after the run to see their tree and decorations, Bert joined us for this - no problems or pains -

NCRC Soup Run

Good run - difficult for me but fun - I would like to do this some more but do need the right kind of shoe - my Kensei while wonderful on the road let to many of the irregular features, rooks and roots of the trail get to my feet - I also plan to get some Trek Poles - I think they would help me a lot with balance especially when descending and maybe climbing - I will have to try them and see - we had a nice group including - Meri, Bert, Jon , Emily, Sue, Geo among others - it was a 5 miles run but felt more like a 10 miler - it was a very pretty run - after the run they server some really good and hot stew and also veggie soup - there was also drink, bread and cookies - all in all a very nice event - no problems no pains -

Once in a Lifetime 12-12-12 Half Marathon Race

Really great run - began with Jon, Emily and Eric - Jon and Eric took off after three loops - Emily and I ran together for the whole race - each loop was 2.17 miles so we ran 6 loops - I really enjoyed myself - Emily and I just had a great time running together - I really enjoy running Halfs - I would like to run Fulls but even though I find Halfs challenging they are very doable and Fulls are just pushing myself a bit too far at this time - I am still doing the Goofy but after that I will not likely do any more Fulls until I can improve my speed and I will be doing speed work after the Goofy - no problems or pains -

Cookie Run 5K - Raleigh Trails Runners

Good run, well walk - I hd planned to run but we walked - it was for recover - the run was a fund raiser for the Raleigh Trail Runners - they had cookies every .25 miles - one could eat them or bag them for later - no I did not eat the cookies, I collected them and will give them away at work Monday - we had a great group show up - Jon & Emily, Bert & Meri, Laura and Ivy - it was a fun event - no problems or pains

Upper Neuse River Green-way

Good run - a completely new trail for me - had a little trouble find the start area - we had a nice group this morning including Bert, Meri, Bo, Laura, Susan and tow other who's names I do not remember - I really need to do better at learning folks names - it was a very nice run and almost flat which was a bit of a surprise being in North Raleigh but the trail follows the river so that makes is flatish - I had intended to run about 8 miles but decided to try to keep up with Meri and the other folks who are faster than me - I did fairly well but did lose some ground in the last mile also I am running a 5K Sunday -  it was sort of strange I was trying to run faster but there seem to be a speed that I could not go past, it was a good bit faster than I usually run but I would have thought I should have been able to go even faster even for just a little bit but the was a place I could not pass - I wonder if there is something wrong or am I doing something wrong - no problems or pains - I was pleased that I did a faster than usually pace -

After Work Run from Work

Good run - decided the only way I would have anywhere near enough light to run was to run from work right after work - it was nice to run my old 3 mile route - had to think about some of the turns but I was OK - did not get lost - I had packed to run the day before when it was a lot warmer but I had enough to be warn enough - I ran without intervals - I felt I ready so I did not bring my GymBoss - I ran as fast as I could without being uncomfortable - I wanted to do as fast a pace as I could - I did well, felt good on the run - had a little pain in left calf at mile 2.5 miles but it was not a cramp or pull and it faded - otherwise no problems no pains -

Good walk - yesterday after my walk I had a sore spot under the ball of my left foot and it continued to be uncomfortable all evening - when I got home from dinner I taped it like I would for "Planter" and that seems to have helped no pain today - KT tape is amazing sometimes - beautiful day clear and cold but nice - I am continuing to push my pace and today was a bit faster - I will continue to do this until I can get to a fast enough walking pace - planning to run from work after work today - looking forward to it and it is the only way I will have enough light to run - no problems or pains -

Fortitude for First Descents Marathon 2012

Good race but much harder for me than I thought it would be - I finished but it took everything I had to do so.  The race was well done and the route was beautiful - there was about 2.5 miles of single or double track trail including a water crossing(well it was a 18 inch wide 3 inch deep channel across the trail) I did get my right heel wet the first time but figured out was way across the other three time with out getting wet - this race consisted of 4 - 6.57 mile loops - I ran the first three loops but could only walk the final loop - when I cross the start line for my finial loop most of the other runners were or had finished their race and everyone thought I was finishing my race so when I ran past they yelled at me - It was so hard to keep going I just raised my hand and held up 4 finger and kept on going - there were three water stations on the route - one at the start and one more at about 2 and 4 miles - during my third loop I asked each of the on route water station if they would be there in about 2 hours when I expected to be back there - each assured me that at least the water would be there - when I got to the two mile station no one was there but the water was so I went on - when I got to the 4 mile station after really suffering through the single track no one was there and neither was the water or at least I could not use it, I could see where they had poured it on the road and it was still running down the hill - I got on Facebook using Siri and asked Jon if he could get me some water - at about mile 24.75 he and a park ranger found me climbing the hill to the battery and had water for me - I finished but I am not sure how - I have never pushed myself this hard and I am still having trouble recovering - I am very tired - I will add more about this race in my blog -

Thursday Lunch Walk

Good walk - I felt really good today legs feel strong and fast - I really push the pace the second half and was able to improve my pace - beautiful day blue sky, cold crisp air - nice day to be outside - Yesterday I had a problem with my Forerunner 910XT not being able to upload data to the site - I after several calls to Garmin I had to do a complete reboot which eases everything which is real annoying but at least I can now download and fell comfortable about using it for the marathon Saturday - no problems no pains -

Raleigh Galloway Training Run #28

Good run - I was not feeling completely recovered from the Half on Thursday so I run 5 miles - I was planning to run it soft but it was so cold I end up running a bit faster - I had a good run with no problems or pains and after I got going I felt pretty good - this will be my last Galloway run this year - next Saturday I will be running the First Decent Full  Marathon -

Skinny Turkey Half Marathon 2012

Real good race - I had a good race not as fast as i had hopped but still a good race and it was very well put on - they started on time - the streets were not closed but they had traffic control where it was needed and they had good water stations - all of them when I was there were stocked and maned but happy, helpful folks - the router was well marked and pretty - the medal is very nice and looks good and in addition to that we also got a nice hat when we finished  - the t-shirts look good and fit also we got socks and arm warmers - a very impressive race - I would recommend it to everyone - one thing this was a very hilly router but it is doable and beautiful to run - we also had great weather - I will likely run this again - my fuel, Apricots, worked well - I had just a little gas about 7 minutes after only some of them - I had not stomach problems and no brain fog - I finished feeling well - I was slower than I had hopped to be but I think this was due to how hill the route was - I am going to get some Tums to see if I can use those while and after I run to help with the gas from the carbs - this does seem like progress - I ate the first one at 52 minutes then one every 30 to 45 minutes after that - I took a caffeine pill at mile 9, 10 and 11.7 - no problems or pains

Sunday Run at White Oak Tobacco Trail

Good run - met with Jon and Emily - Bert, Meri and Ivy could not make it - We had a real nice run - we were together for a mile or so the Jon took off and Emily and I continued to run 30:30s - I was wanting to try run a 15:45 pace and we managed to get real close to that and I felt real good - I was eating the dried Apricots about every 20 minutes not that I needed them on such a short run but I needed to test them and so far they seem very good - no problems no pain -

Recovery Run around Fort Raleigh

Real nice recovery run with Emily, Meri, Bert, Ivy and Jon - after sight seeing at Island Fort - there were some single track trails and we just ran around until we had done the distance we wanted - it was a nice run and I felt good - I was trying to push my pace but could not tell how I was doing the trees were giving the instance pace - I was a little faster but not as much as I had hopped - maybe run on the trails slowed me down  - I ate a dried Apricot before the run and after about 35 minutes of the run - I had no problem with them no problems with feel poorly and no belching from them - this is promising  - no problems or pains -

After OBX Marathon Recovery Ride

Real nice after noon ride with Meri - we rode from the house, Satisfaction, at OBX North up Virgina Dare Tr. to about mile 3 where we were blocked due to the work they were doing to clear up from hurricane Sandy - I was a nice ride but there was a pretty good head wind on out South - when we got back to the house Meri dropped off I continued on South for five more miles and then returned - I really enjoyed this ride - I am feeling a lot better after my ride -

OBX Outer Banks 8K Challenge 2012

Real good race - ran with Meri and Emily started Marjorie, Rebecca but their pace was a bit faster - was pleased with the pace we ran doing the same pace Sunday will be great - felt good and ran well - had a lot of fun - Jon ran back up the route after finishing his race and join us to run in with it - such fun - feeling good looking forward to Sundays Full - I ate a piece Quest bar at mile 2.75 to test how I would do and I had no problems or ill effects I even seemed to get a little boost by mile 4 - going to try them taking a piece and a macadamia nuts to add more fat - I am really hopeful that this will work for me - it is about shower and nap time -

Thursday Lunch Walk

Good walk - felt real good today - was walking well - I was trying to push the pace and did manage to go a little faster - also today I had received the Quest bars I ordered - I cut one of each in quarters - I ate one at the start of my walk and one after one mile - I was fasting since about 8 PM last night at this time - This is faster than I will be using them during my long runs but it was the only test I could come up - this is a very limited test but so far no problems - no problems or pains - I want to try to run this evening but I have a lot to do to get ready to travel to OBX so it may not happen -

City of Oaks Half Marathon 2012

Good race - had a great time running the with my friends Jon's with Emily - she was great company and it was fun - in spite of what seemed like might be bad weather it was pretty good not as cold as I thought it was going to be and it did not rain even though there was a thunder storm at 4:20AM - the route, volunteers, water stop, bathrooms - everything in my view was very well done  - I ran pretty well and felt real good until about mile 10 and I was just getting a little tired - I decided to eat a few Sports Beans at mile 11 to see if that would help - I was a little worried about doing this because I had had some trouble on training runs when I had eaten grape or oranges during the run - I finished the run but was not feeling well - I went to the medical tent to get my blood pressure checked - it was fine but I was not - I have limited space here and have a lot to say about what I have figured out - I will put this and the rest in my blog - @ http://turtleaws3.blogspot.com/2012/11/city-of-oaks-half-marathon-2012.html

Besides my blood pressure which they tested twice - the first one right after I finished the race was 141/84 pluses of 134 which was about what I usually get when I have taken my meds and not been running about 10 minutes later I was still feeling poorly so I asked Debbie the lady from REX that was looking after me to take it again it was 118/66 pluses 124 which she said was great.  I was not feel right so she checked the O2 in my blood and told me it was 98% which was also great.  I asked them to check my blood sugar it came out as 135, I expected it to be real low based on how I felt.  Debbie felt 135 was fine since I had eaten 7, yes I counted them, Cherry Sports Beans at mile 11.2.  I was baffled nothing was wrong but I felt bad.  Why was I feeling so bad if everything was good she also told me my color was good and I looked OK.  I sat there for over an hour feeling poorly but I could not understand why.  I decided to see if I could stand and get back to my car.  With Debbie watching me I stood up expecting to be very light headed and to have a problem but I did not.  I was not light headed but I still felt very poorly.  I decided to walk to my car and found I could walk easily, my legs were not sore or tired and I could walk without any problem.  As I walked to my car I began to realize I was not having a problem with light headedness but I was having trouble thinking clearly like I was drugged somehow.  Physically I was really doing great after running 13.1 miles but I was having trouble thinking like I was in a fog. That is when I had the epiphany, I was experiencing what I had heard some people on some of the podcasts and blogs I read describe as 'Brain-fog'.  That is what I felt like I was in a fog. I had heard these folks talk about feeling poorly and like they were in a fog because they had eaten a lot of carbs. But I had not eaten a lot of carbs I had eaten 7 beans. Then as the fog cleared a bit I really began to think.

I had already learned over the last several year that I do not have a normal metabolism.  While I was still trying to control my blood sugar with the drugs and insulin I would get all sorts of unexplainable blood sugar swings even thought I was eating what I was suppose to, eating on a regular schedule and taking my drugs at the same time.  I over time found out the only way I could get it under control was to stop eating almost all carbs. I have recently found out that my weight lose efforts had be stalled because that about once I week I would treat myself to Sushi.  That one single ingestion of carbs was keeping me out of ketosis, which was necessary for me to lose weight.  By increasing the amount of fat and eating almost on carbs I am losing weight again.  So lets assume for what ever reason my body does not handle carbs well and it is now use to functioning with almost none and seems to be functioning well based on haw I have been feeling.  Then I when it is already under stress dump a lot of carbs into it. Is 7 Sport Beans a lot of carbs, to most people no but my current diet contains about 6 grams of carbs a day. Based on the info on the package I ate 12.5 grams at one time twice or more than what I would eat all day all at once in a form that is designed to go into ones system very fast.  What I normally eat is always with a lot of fat and some protein.  I am thinking that I just cannot take that much at one time. Most of my friends have told me I should eat more carbs when I run and I can understand why it works for them. They eat them and they get a boost but I really believe when I eat them in that amount something else happens in me.  I have no way to know but I can try to find some other way to fuel my running. I do know the last four times when I have eaten carbs during the run I have had this sort of problems I just did not put it together and recognize the similarities of the problems I had after each run.

My pan is to cut up a Quest bar into little bit size pieces - I have eaten them on runs in the past and not had problems that I remember but they are hard to eat especially if it is a little cold. If I have them cut into small pieces I can eat little bit often without trouble. I really hope this works eating carbs sure does not.

Good and easy run - Jeff only wanted me to do two miles and to run it easy so I did - Run with Emily, Geo and Farsat - it was a nice run a little cool but not bad - I felt like and wanted to run faster and longer which I guess is a good thing - no problems no pains - after the run we went to Emily hone foe a real good salad and chill diner - it was pretty paleo which as nice Leslie, Meir and Bert joined us for dinner -

Tir na nOg Club Run #73

Good run - Bert and I ran together - it was nice - the weather however was not great and got worse - it drizzled or rained most of the run - it never rained very hard and I was prepared for it - we had a good run I got a little cold Bert was OK - if I had not have been preparing to City of Oaks I would likely have skipped it - it is nice to be dry and warm now - no problems or pains -

After run Walk

Good but hard walk - I rested a while after the run - I felt pretty good until I sat down but I got real tired once I sat - I visited with my friends for a while then just rested after they left - I recovered a bit and bought some socks then went out for the balance of my walk - I was still feeling pretty tire and I bit unfocused - I just did the best I could and rested 15 minutes once I got back to my car then drove home - I took it real easy going home still feeling a bit unfocused - I made it home safely and showered and rested - I thought I would sleep but I have not - 24 miles total - second longest run yet - it has taken me a number of hour to recover - I am doing well now -

Raleigh Galloway Training #24

Good run - very good run - ran with Bert and Meri mostly Geo joined us part way he and Bert turn back at about 5 miles- Meri ran all 14 miles with me - she was a lot of help keeping me company - I ran very well and at a pretty good pace - I was good unit mile 13 then I faded a bit but it was a good run - thanks Geo, Bert and Meri -

Run around Shelley Lake

Good run - ran with Bert, Meri was tied up with work - Bert and I had a real good run - we took it a little easy so I could be prepared for my long run Saturday but we still did a nice pace - no problems or pain - Bert and I started running together and I always enjoy running with him - Meri made us all a nice dinner and we had a real nice visit after the run - we talked a lot about the OBX trip -

Tir na n0g Club Run #72

Good run - the weather was nearly perfect - no one else was running so I ran solo starting at about 5:40 - I felt a bit tired before the ran and the first half mile was hard but it got better and I felt pretty good after that - I was trying to push my pace but felt pretty slow - my pace was better than I thought it would be but still pretty slow - no problems or pain - negative splits - I have been having trouble with getting lightheaded when i stand up for sitting - i did not have any trouble with it during or after the run - I wonder if losing 13 pounds in the last 4 weeks could cause the BP meds I take to be too much -  i had a good run but missed my friends -

Good run - not one of my preferred routes but it was OK today - we had about 9 in our group - we had a nice run - it was still quite cool but the shy was clear and blue and it was a nice day - ran with Bert, Meri, Geo among others - they had been upgrading the trail and part of it had been paved - it was and will be real nice - I was a little tired from the walk but it was a good run - no problems no pains

Tir na n0g Club Run # 71

Good run - nice weather - it rained a lot before the run and stopped long enough for us to run then started again just a few minutes after we finished - ran with Bert and Meri - Meri was just 2 day from finishing her trail marathon and I was 2 day after run and walking 20 miles - so we were both recovering - we did a soft run - it was nice - a real good run - no problems or pains -

After Galloway Run Walk

Good walk but difficult - Jeff said I could take up to a 4 hour break total if I needed to between the runs and walks - there was about one half hour between the first walk and the run and about an hour and a half between the run and second walk - I was very stiff and a bit tired when I started and it took me a little bit to get up to speed but after that is was not a problem - I had a number of little foot and leg pains but nothing lasted or was server - no problems - I was walking as fast as I could but it was still pretty slow - except for being very tired when I finished I was fine - 20 miles total today - I am pleased -

Raleigh Galloway Training Run #22

Good run - I did well - I was not sure how I would do after walking the 4 miles before the run but it was OK - I was getting very tired at about 11 miles but I just took extra walk breaks and did fine - I ran with the Pacers again - a real nice group of runners - most of the group turned around at 4 miles just one other runner stayed - we ran all 12 miles together - his name was Rob - I had just met him today - we had a good run - I think he could have run me into the ground but was and said he was content to run the pace I was setting - He and I went to the gathering after the run it was nice - Meri is out doing a trail marathon today - good luck Meri - I had a pretty bad pain in my left leg - it went from knee all the way down and felt like it was deep inside - we were about to start walk break so we just walk and the next time we ran I was fine - no problems -

Tir na nOg Club Run #70

Great run - weather was pretty iffy but the rain did stop long enough for us to run on wet streets but with dry air - cold air but dry - I felt really good and was running very well - I might have been able to run a little faster than i did but it was a good pace - I ran with Bert, Meri and Bo - Bert and I were running pretty hard Meri and Bo were sort of coasting they were talking and joking behind us - it was a lot of fun and a good run - we got back to the nOg and were sitting outside for about 5 minutes and it started to rain - we went inside for a while but did not eat - no problems or pains -

Saturday Training Walk

Good walk - my coach has me adding walking to increase my endurance - this is that first time I have been able to do it after the run - Meri joined my for the walk - I worry weather she should of she has a trail full next weekend but she seemed to want to and I enjoyed the company - we filled water bottles when we finished our 8 mile run and took off - no rest break which is good - I did well but was getting tired by mile 2 - but we did finish and except for feeling tired I was good - no problems no pains - farthest I have gone in three months - thanks Meri

Evening Ride from Home

Really good run - Ran with Bert, Meri and Ivy were also running but they were running ahead of us them walking back during the walk intervals - it was great fun and let them get a better workout - it was warm and humid tonight but I did well - ran well and had no problems or pains - I had my head lamp but the batteries were almost dead so it was of little use - I have already changed them so I will be ready next time - it got pretty dark by the time we finish - I was surprised by the number of folks still out there when it was pretty dark - Meri and Bert made us a great dinner and I really enjoyed the company - good times -

Sunday Long Walk

Good walk - I was scheduled to walk 6 mile yesterday after my 10 mile run - I was not able to do it so I planned to do it today hopping it would be of some help - I got pretty depressed after the run yesterday and had talked myself out of walking twice today when Emily called and said Jon wanted to do a short run and asked if I want to come walk with her - it really helped me get out of the house - Emily and i walked 4.4 four miles while Jon walked for 5 minutes then ran a fast mile out and back to us then walked 5 minutes - he did this 5 times then Emily headed back while Jon and I finished my walking - Jon got over 8 miles in - I had no problems or pains but could tell I was not fully recovered but otherwise did well -

Raleigh Galloway Training Run #20

Good run - not good weather - cool and rainy only thing worse is cold and rainy - I join the 15 minute pace group today as did Meri and Emily - everyone else in the group except Meri and I turned around at 3.4 miles - Meri and I did 5 then turned around - Meri went back out and did a second 10 miles - I was suppose to walk an additional 6 after the run but I was so tired I did not do it - I am a bit disappointed by this but it is what it is so maybe Sunday I will be able to do the 6 miles - other wise I had a good but slow run - I did have to walk in from about 9.2 miles - it did not rain the whole time but it did a good bit of the second half - Meri was a good running partner and I own her a lot - I felt very poorly after the run some of it was some stomach troubles but I also it was my longest run in 3 months - - I did finish

Wednesday Evening Run

Good run - really good run the only thing that stopped it from being a great run is that I am feeling really spent, too spent after the run - I did not feel that way right after the run but about an hour and a half after it I am really exhausted - it was my best run and fastest pace in three month also my longest mid-week run in three months - I really felt good and strong during the run and only struggled on the big hill at the end a bit - I was going up it pretty slow and breather pretty hard - had lots of great company tonight, Meri, Bo(Maureen) and Geo - Bert joined Meri and I for dinner after the run also a very nice time - tonight really did feel like progress - now i must take it easy Thursday and then give myself a good recovery day Friday so I can do my 10 miler Saturday - no problems no pain and I am not needing any KT Tape right now -

Good run - nice weather - Meri and I ran this new green-way called House Creek Trail - it is a real nice trail a bit hilly but not bad - I am sure we will run it more - I felt like my legs were pretty sluggish but as I ran I got to feeling better and in spite of the hills had my best pace for 3 months - I know this is not a big improvement but it sure is the right direction - after the run Bert met us and we had a nice dinner at Tripp's -

Tuesday Lunch Walk (Swim)

Good run - no problems no pain - I have my right knee and left foot KTapped but with those tapped I do not have pain - the knee is the same old problem the foot is plantar fascia - it happen during the long walk Sunday but the tape takes care of it - there was a really big storm coming and I went out early but not early enough - a little over half way it started to sprinkle and was raining hard when I got finished - except for being wet it was fine -

Sunday Training Long Walk

Good walk - my coach has me doing walks the day after my long runs to prepare me for doing the OBX Challenge and Goofy both of which are back to back races - the OBX is an 8K followed by the full marathon and the Goofy is a half marathon followed by a full marathon the next day - in spit of the challenges I have had the last couple of months it is still my goal to do and finish both of these events also the City of Oaks half and maybe one more half before CoO - Last week I was suppose to run 5 miles on Sat. and walk 8 miles on Sun - because of riding 50 miles Sat. and Sun. at the MS Tour I did not run my 5 miles and I only walked 4 miles on Monday but it was all I felt I could do and at least it was a start - I had a real good week of running - I walked 1 miles at lunch every day and ran about 3 Wed. & Thr. I had my best run in a long time Sat. - today my coach wanted me to walk 12 miles but I was really spent after 10 and I had done the last mile in the rain so I only walked 10 - I am OK with this I will have to see what he says - I am committed to get caught up to his schedule - this has been a good weeks - thanks to all my friends for your support -

Raleigh Galloway Training Run #18

Great Run - wow it has been a long time since I have ben able to say the - this is most likely the farthest I have run in three months and I did have a very good run - no problems but I did have a little pain in my right hamstring - and new one for me - and a little pain on the outside on my lower right leg below the knee - this was gone by the end of the run - I really felt good during the run - I ate my full normal pre-race/run breakfast this morning and that may have helped - I had been just eating a few ounces of cheese before runs - I did take and Endurlites and two Caffeine pills twice during the run - I was pretty tired after the run but felt good and I was not just destroyed as I have been previously - today was a big success - I believe my two mid-week run and walking at least a mile every day helped - had a great ime after the run - drove out and picked up two runner that needed help and waited to Meri to finish her 20 miles had a real nice lunch at Two Guys with Meri, Bert and Ivy - a great day -

Good walk- nice out today not hot or cold - felt good but did not feel I was as fast as yesterday - I try to walk as fast as I can when I am walking but always seem to be a bit slower than the walk intervals when I am running and I think it is because I am wearing my VFFs when I am walking at lunch - no problems no pain - BP an hour after my walk 153/92 79 pluse

Monday Morning Walk

Good walk - Jeff wanted me to walk 8 miles and I had planned on doing so but I was so tired after 4 I cut it short - guess I am more wore out after riding the MS Tour than I thought - I really want to get my training back on track but not doing well so far - I was suppose to run 5 miles this weekend which I did not on Saturday and Sunday I was suppose to walk 8 miles - I rode 56 miles Saturday and 47miles on Sunday - I will rest the rest of today and get myself back on schedule as quickly as possible - The Forerunning was not showing any distance covered so at the turn around point I turned it off and restarted it - so I got half the walk and doubled the distance, time and so forth -

MS Tour 50 miles 2012

Good ride - I had a good time and a good ride - no problems no pain - the ride was well supported and the route was nice most roads in good shape - lots of volunteers - it did get pretty hot - I ate half and orange at each rest stop except lunch where I had an burger patty with fixens and American cheese stuff - it was really a nice event - I had wanted to ride the century but the more intelligent part of me decided to ride the 50 and it was the right distance for me at this time -

ISO Wine Run

Good run and a really nice group of ladies to run with - I know the paces was pretty slow for them but I did appreciate the company - I am still a little concerned about running alone - I ran pretty well - we did walk part of two of the hills and I asked for a couple of extra walk breaks but it is a little bit of and improvement and I am pleased with the progress - I know I keep complaining about how slow and weak I am - I am trying not to complain about it - all of my friends have been so supportive -  I had no problems or pain everything seems to be fine except I do not seem to be able to go as fast as was able to -

Run Raleigh 8K

Good race but also a challenge for me - My friend Meri invited me to sweep the race with her and I did want to run the race - I did OK for the first mile, but began to slow down the next mile by the beginning of the third I was only walking I could walk at a pretty good pace but I did not feel I could run - at 3.1 miles I got a ride back to the start - My first DNF - I knew when I decided to do this race I might DNF - I felt I could finish walking but I would have just cause the race to stay open longer than they hopped to keep the course open - Running the first mile in 16s and the second in the 17s was still a victory  - if I had gone out a bit slower I may have run farther but who knows - before this race I tested myself and found I was in Moderate Ketosis  - I have been eating a very low carbohydrate diet to do this so I could start losing weight again and it was working, however I also have begun to believe that this diet is also slowing and staling my recovery - during this race I tried eating one packet of Cherry Sports Beans - total of 25 grams of carbohydrates it did seem to help me run - after the run I ate one half of an orange and had a bite of banana also a little cheese - I tested myself again and I was mostly out of Ketosis - now I will see how long it will the me to get back to Moderate Ketosis because I am going to put training for OBX and the Goofy before my weight lose -

Monday about 24 hours after the run I again tested myself after going right back to my extra low carb diet and I was right back into Moderate Ketosis which is so great - it means I can use some Carbs for longer training runs without completely derailing my weight lose goals.

Raleigh Galloway Training Run # 16

Good run but challenging for me - I tried so hard to run the correct pace for the first two miles while I was leading the whole Tapirs group but I was just not fast enough and I really put myself in a hole doing this - once we spite off the Late start group I continued to try to keep the pace but switched to 1 minute run two minute walk and this did help me recover - I did walk up Lassiter Mill hill - even walking this was a challenge for me at this point in the run - I told the group I needed to walk it but if they wanted to run it to go ahead and everyone did - I was proud of them - I finished my first 4 mile run standing, not dizzy or light headed but very very tired - I needed to sit down as soon as I was able - I am beginning to believe the extremely low carbohydrate diet I am I have been following for the last two months is hampering my ability to train - I am not really sure what to do about this - the diet does seem to have started my weight loss but if my training does not start to improve I am concerned about being able to prepare for City of Oaks, OBX challenge and the Goofy - I am thinking about figuring out how many grams of carbohydrates are in a Sports Bean and consuming say 5 grams of carbohydrates in Sports Beans when I seem to be fading durning the 8K Meri and I are sweeping tomorrow - I am sure it will kick me out of Ketosis but it will also let me know if part of my performance problem is the carbohydrate restrictions I have placed on myself -  except for fatigue no problems no pains - it was very hot and extremely humid today a couple of our runners had heat problems -

Tir ra nOg Club Run #66

Good run - hot and humid tonight - Meri ran with me - I was running pretty much as fast as I was able - I felt good and ran well - I did slow down through the run - but I did fell like I was doing pretty good - I just have to keep pushing it - this is the first nOg run I have made in over 2 months - also this is the first time in over 2 months I have have trained three days in a roll - I am doing better I just have a ways to go get back to where I was and go beyond - BP a couple of hours after the run 139/75 pulse 90 -

Team CBC Brewery Ride

Good ride - not great but good is OK for now at least I am riding - Planned on riding 19 miles with Meri and whoever else was riding 19 - there was some confusion about the route - those of use wanting to ride 19 ended up doing 26 - I should have know more about the route so it was my fault - sorry Meri - the first part of the ride was very very hard for me - my legs just did not have any power - my big calfs felt like huge bags of sand - it was everything I could do to do 14 to 15 top speed - the group was great and just waited for me at turns - sorry they had to do that - we stopped at Duncan's for a break - I felt fine when I got off Turtle no dizziness or light headedness - I got a diet Dew for the liquid and Caffeine - I have no idea what changed but after that I had legs - I have no idea where they came from but I just felt like I could just go go go  - maybe it was the Dew or Caffeine or the break it was real nice to to feel like I could ride again - I had a little pain in my right backside but other wise no problems - Turtle preformed well - she is a joy to ride - I go to meet Beci who I have been talking to on FB for a while she was very helpful getting us back in a shorter route after we got off route -

Raleigh Galloway Training Run #15

Good run - I really enjoyed this run and leading the Late Start 1:1 group we had 5 runners - Beth was helping me lead the group - i felt like I was going pretty good but my pace was much much slower than I thought it was - I was running pretty much all out and still only managed to run in the 19s - I did fell good after the run which is a plus but I decided not to do the additional mile I had planned on because I ran so hard during the 3 miles - I do fell like I am making progress but it is really hard running in the 19s when I was able to run it the 14s - I was never very fast but I fell really slow

Wednesday Evening Run

Good run - Rn with Emily, Meri and Bert - we had a great time and a good run - everyone ran my ice which must have been very slow for them but I enjoyed the company - I ran well and had no problem or pains just a lot slower than i was and that is diffcult - my plan for now is to work on building my endurance to run distance then I will work on speed - I could have run farther but I was pretty much at my limit for speed - Emily had to take off Bert and Meri fixed us a real nice dinner - a real nice evening

Raleigh Galloway Training Run #14

Good run - not as good as running use to be but getting better - running 3 miles was not too challenging but I choose to take everyones advise and in some cases commands and only run 3 miles today - I need to get my endurance and milage up as quickly as is safe - I am still planning on running the City of Oaks Half, the OBX Challenge (a 10K Saturday and the Full on Sunday) also next year the Goofy (Disney's Half on Saturday and the Full on Sunday) these are still my goals.  I measured my blood pressure before my run it at 6:08 AM it was 159/103 which it high like it seems to be every morning,  3 minutes after the run at 7:57 AM it was 120/82 at 8:30 AM it was 115/78. At 8:37 AM I went to stand and got light headed so I took my pressure at 8:37 AM it was 81/67.  I sat back down and quickly my head cleared.  I had only minor boughs of light headedness after this.  I am so looking forward to getting this fixed, I had not trouble while running it is just when I stop.

Evening Run from home

Good run - long time since I could write that - I felt slow and sluggish but good - but I was feeling good while running and got to feeling better as I ran - It was a bit darker than I expected I have and should have taken my head lamp - I found myself slowing down to make sure I did not trip but most of the time I was running about as fast as I could - my pace was a little disappointing but it is a good start - I have a lot for friends who have really helped me get back to running -

Nice walk with some friends

Meri and Bert came over after work tonight and we went for a casual walk on the trails at Lake Benson.  It was nice and I felt well.  It was a casual pace but my legs felt good no pain or stiffness left from Saturday.  I really hope I can run Thursday and this Saturday. We went to Tripp's afterwards i twas also very nice.

Raleigh Galloway Training Run #13

We took the Group picture today. I had planned to run six miles but was not feel great so I decided to walk sin - I was still hopping to be able to run and walk the Va Beach RR half - I did well to about mile 4 then I got light headed again and almost blacked out again - Maureen who has decided to walk with me called Micki and she who was already on her way to her own run - she picked me up and took me to REX emergency - They checked me out - blood work - blood sugar, cat scan of my head all normal my blood pressure was too low which was strange because I had been having trouble with it being high - he changed my meds and sent me home - told me to keep running - Micki and Maureen were wonderful - they moved my car to the hospital and stayed with me - I should not have tried to go so far - I really thought I could do it - Up to mile 4 it was good -

Run at Symphony Lake Greenway

Good run, not great but good and my first run since blacking out after my run July 7th.  My doctors, yes I have several now still do not know why I blacked out but I was told I could run if I felt like it.  It was short and pretty slow but it was running. I did get a little light headed after the run but generally  felt good. Meri, Bert and Emily ran with me it was really great not to do this alone, I am sure it was pretty slow for them but it helped me, Emily brought Farsat, he seemed to like my pace.  My legs and feet felt really strange when I first started like they did not know what to do or how it should feel, I had had this same sort of feeling when walk a couple of weeks ago but I do not any more and as we ran each interval, we ran 1:1s it got better - the route is almost flat there were a few short hills, climbing was not a problem but descending felt uncomfortable - I expect this will also improve with time and running - So great to be running again and my depression is so much better today - my resting heart rate is still high and my blood pressure it still high most of the time for a while after the run is was mostly normal and even got pretty low for a bit - I really hope the doctors can fix this soon - still hopping to run Va Beach RR Half 9-2

Cardatic Catheration

Yesterday I had a Cardatic Catheration due to inclusives results from a Necular Stress test and an Echo Cardiogram.  I was pretty nervous about the procedure, I know it is pretty routine now but the idea of having something stuck in my and especial my heart freaked my out a bit.  The worse part turned out to be having two IVs put in. They only used one the other was just a safety measure. They went in through my right arm near my wrist and it is pretty sore.  The doctor told me they did not find any problems and no blockages.  They did not have to do any repairs. He said I have a little plack any he felt that would be improved by having me take a low dose aspirin every day.  When I had the stress test they thought I might have a blockage but he said I did not and when they did the stress they also did some sort of flow test which is an indication of how strong ones heart is.  The stress test gave a result of 49% which is low.  I was told it should be above 55% to be healthy and normal.  I was told that this test is now as accurate as they can get with the Catheration. It gave me a flow of 64% which I was told was very good. So the good new my heart is not just good but in very good shape for a man with my health history and of my age, the bad news I still do not know why I blacked out. I was told I can run Monday if I fell up to it.  I hope I do.

Good run well walk - I run a little but it did not feel right so I walked most of the run - it was not easy but also not too hard - my legs are a bit tired but I am feeling good no problems - Maorine fell early in her run so she came back and walked with me - it was nice to have company - she is an amazing runner - she has done a lot of halves and fulls and has a lot more planned - even though I was just walking it was still a good workout - I was really hopping to be able to run more today maybe Monday - I as really great to see everyone one - I have miss the group and running

Thursday Lunch Walk

Good walk - I was really hoping to feel better than I did yesterday but I felt a little worse - my legs did not hurt but felt very stiff especially my calves - my left calf and hamstring hurt a little - I have done these walks in my VFFs because I always wear them for walking - I was trying to walk as quickly as possible but it was still very slow - no other problems it was hotter today and bright sun light - I will take Friday off and plan to run/walk Saturday three to five miles - I am registered for the RR Half in VA Beach which is five weeks from this Saturday - I would really like to do that race - it was nice to be able to do the walk - BP was 126/92 after the walk

Lunch Time Walk

Good walk and the first time I have done any exercise in two and a half weeks - I blacked out and fell after a training run and have not felt well or stable enough on my feet to run or walk since - today I had the second good day in a row, my ribs which were hurt in the fall and healing and only a little sore now - I am not walking as well as I did before the fall but am doing better - I really enjoyed the walk I wish I could have been running but not yet - I was walking as fast as I was able and am a bit disappointed at how slow my pace is - it was 80 when I started and 82 when I finished but the sun was behind some clouds and it was not bad out today - I did not fell tired, or spent after the walk just slow - well it is at least a start :) I checked my blood pressure after the walk and it was 141/85 not great but not too bad

Hello blog,  been a while since I wrote to you except for recording my training.  Guess my life has been pretty good and there was not a need for someone to talk to.  I am so frustrated - since the fall after the Galloway truing run I have been having trouble walking - no one even my doctor seems to believe me because I assume they can see me walking.  But it is not the same, before the fall I could just walk without having to think about it.  Now I have to think about ever part of the process and I never fell steady on my feet.  I fell like one feels when trying to carry something heavy over ones head, not something too heavy to carry but something that messes with your center of balance.  I cannot image being able to run like this.  Also I have having a lot of trouble with depression and since I cannot walk, run or ride I do not know what to do - I find I am hiding in Middle Earth - at least I enjoy being in there.

Galloway Training Run #8

This is hard for me to write - today for the first time I had to turn back and cut short a Galloway run - I had some sort of problem and had to make the decision to turn back early during the run - I was feeling very drained - I just had no energy or power after a nights sleep and eating normally - it was very hard for me to do - I got back to my car and sat for a while - I got to feeling better so I went out to ran a bit more got to feeling poorly again and went back to my car again once more I recovered and went out to run more - I got back to my car tired but not feeling bad but I should not have been this tired after only 5.5 miles - I rested a little in my car felt better got out and got light headed so I leaned against my car - the next thing I remember I am trying to get up from the ground asking who ever was trying to check me out why I was on the ground - I have no memory of the fall - I was told I fell like a tree not making any sort of attempt to break the fall - I do not know what was wrong with me - I felt like my blood pressure was low but when the Medics took it twice and it was high - I am concerned - I have not been feeling right for at least two months - I have setup a appointment to see my doctor Tuesday morning - I want to be able to run again -

Firecracker Ride 2012

Good ride but also sort of a failure - I was never feel that well even before the ride but hoped I would improve - I was pushing as hard as I could from the start and only was able to average 13.7 - at the rest stop I ate half a banana with a little peanut butter on it - washed the sweat off my face - went to the potty drank a little and hit the road again - to my surprise I was feeling a lot better and was able to ride most of the time at a pace of about 20 mph - in the last 2 miles before the second rest stop I started to feel poorly again - again at the rest stop I ate a half a banana and went to the potty - as I came out of the potty I realized I was very light headed and not feel well at all - I decided to ask for a ride back to the start - this was very hard for me to do - I hate to not finish a ride, run or race but something was just wrong - this should not have been difficult ride for me - I got a ride back with Gary a friend and Ham that was doing support for the ride - thanks Gary - I never felt too hot - I am still feeling pretty poorly - not sure what is wrong - very frustrated! - also I forgot to turn off the GPS so the data and map is all messed up - sorry -

Tuesday After Work Run

Good run - but I am not right - I just do not have the endurance I use to it is so annoying - I did not feel well Monday so I skipped Tir na nOg - I really want to get my two weekly run in so due to the Firecracker Ride tomorrow I decided to run this evening on the treadmill at my gym - it was 97 degrees outside - I had some pain in my left hamstring but it was not too bad -

Galloway Training Run #7

Good run - nice day we had a nice group show up for was was billed as a very hot day - it was warm but was no where near as bad as I expected it to be and everyone had a good time - was a lot of fun to run with the Tapirs again - very nice to have Emily back this week - I ran well but had some trouble especially in the last mile - I am sure it was the heat but also I still do not feel like I am anywhere near back to the level I had before I fell - I did not think I would lose so much and it would be this hard to get back to where I was before - still had a good time - wow sure is hot today my weather station says it is 105 outside right now -

Tuesday Lunch Run

Good run but not easy - I had to take two walk breaks - I use to be able to run 3 or more miles with out walks but in spite of my efforts I did lose a lot of my conditioning while recovering I guess it was silly to expect to go right back to where I was when I was able to resume normal training - it was a beautiful day - it was 73 on the 26th of June with nice humidity - tiny bit of pain in the right knee but it faded no other problems except it seemed harder than it should of been and I was slower than I was wanting to run - still it was nice to run with no rib pain and just nice to go running -

Galloway Training Run #6

Good run - nice day - bit warm and very humid but this is the end of June and we have had great weather until this week - I had a good run and my ribs did not hurt with every right foot plant - this is the first run since the fall that this has been true - about mile five I had some small pain from deep breathing but is was pretty slight - I really do feel like I am healing - at about 5.5 I was really feeling the effects of limited training the last three weeks - I was having pretty high heart rates and some slight dizziness when I would stop running, while running I was fine - will do everything I can to get at least two mid-week runs in this coming week - I am sure I needed the time off to heal but I found it annoying - the heat today I am sure also had its effect on me - We had a nice group and it was great to be back running after missing the group run last week - also a good gathering after the run - I really missed that last week also.

Tough run - I rally thought my ribs were healed but after just a few steps I found out differently - it was not as painful but more so than I expected - almost nothing else hurts now so I though I could run and I wanted to - I felt like I could barely move and was dragging a manhole cover behind me - I did get to feeling better as I ran - it was humid but not too hot - I hope I have not lose as much as I fell like I have - no problems no pain -

Team CBC Brewery Run Sunday - 50 miles

Good ride - I had finished the modifications to Turtle 3 yesterday - I had gotten the data cable extension which allowed me to move the Bionx Command Console to the right side of the trike - I was also able to mount the rear brake switch - it was real nice being able to use the rear brake - Turtle 3 preformed beautifully - it was a good route - I was riding the 15 mph group - I do to know why but a lot of the cyclist in that group wanted to ride a lot faster than 15 mph avg. - Why do that not just ride with one of the faster group? My ribs did hurt some but not too bad - breathing too deeply was difficult but I am getting better - might be able to run Tir na nOn Monday if not it is back to the pool - missed my long run this weekend - Work.

Water Running

Good workout - my pool was closed so I had to go the pool at the Rex in Raleigh - it is not as nice a place and my Garner gym - the pool at the Raleigh gym only had 4 lanes and they were all busy when I got the - I was able to get in at about 5:07pm so I was just only barely able to to get my hour in do to the some class that was going to take up the whole pool - I did 4 more laps than recorded testing the swim feature of the 910xt but ti did not recored anything - so i will have to keep recording the laps manually - I was a good workout but next time I will try a different gym

Water Running

OK I was not sure what to call this because I was not really running - one of the people who work at the pool call it Water Running so that is what I will call it - I did not seem very hard to do but my ribs only hurt a tiny bit - I was not sure how much to do - since I can run 3 miles in about 45 minutes - so I decided to do the Water Running for an hour - my legs did feel tired when I went to climb out of the pool - I am not sure how much good this did but at least it is something I can do -

Monday Workout

Well I am officially tired of having my ribs hurt - I went to Tir na nOg - I saw a few of my friends but Meri nor Emily showed up, the weather was poor so it makes sense - I was not sure about running and decided to go the Rex, my gym, and try the treadmill and some other machines but all of them hurt - i wish i knew how long this will take - it is so strange to have my feet, knee and legs be just fine and still not be comfortable running - I also cannot get on to and off of my trike so I cannot ride either - I am planning to try running in the pool Tuesday

Galloway Training Run #4

Great run - we had really nice weather for June the temperature did get up above 75 by the end but it is still a great day - I really wanted to run - it was my first run since the fall lad week at the half also it is very likely I will have to work next Saturday - I was still hurting a good bit with my ribs nothing else really gave me trouble but the ribs did hurt a good but and still made it hard to breath deeply - we had a good group and everyone seems to be have a good run - in spite of the fact that I missed a turn and we got off the route - we turned around but figured it was too far for it to be good for the newer running to run in safely so Meri called back to some of the other leader and arranged for pickup - I decided to take a ride back also my ribs were really hurting by then - Meri and Jafar with three other runners decided to finish and they ended up doing 10.5 miles -

Lunch Walk

First walk after the fall - it was OK but harder than I thought - I did OK but was hopping to be better - both knees and my ribs hurt - still it was nice to go walk - I feel like I should be getting better faster
